So, to continue the story of Julie and her pregnancy...
Dr. Greenspoon sent Julie, almost 29 weeks pregnant, to the Ronald McDonald House to wait out her pregnancy and the twins births. Up until now, she had to lay in her hospital bed, no getting up except to use the bathroom. She had a monitor attached around her belly 24/7, right up until they unhooked it for her to leave the hospital.
I decided to stay at the Ronald McDonald House (Which I will now refer to as RMH) with Julie and Garrett, so she could spend as much time with Garrett as possible. I stayed from Wednesday until Friday night when Scott came home from Tech School in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he had been for the past two months. Scott was home until Sunday night when he had to report to Whiteman AFB where he would be stationed until July.
Julie and Scott came home for a few hours on Saturday and attended Danielle's high school graduation. Julie was feeling good, although still having a few light contractions. It didn't last though.
Julie started having more frequent and intense contractions on Sunday and she thought she was having a few too many and went over to labor and delivery to be checked out. It turned out she was in labor and they kept her there.
I was coming back on Sunday evening to stay with Julie while Scott went back to Whiteman and was on the road, exiting on James River Expressway when Scott called me. He asked where I was, I told him and I asked if everything was OK. He said it was and so I came on to the hospital. When I got there, I found out that Julie was dilated to a "6" and the doctor said that at a "7" the babies could be born because they were so little so they were going to go ahead and do a C-section.
The reasoning for a C-section was this, and Dr. Dix had explained it to Julie a few weeks before. If the baby in front, that was lower, was head down and the back one was breech presentation, it would be possible to have them naturally, even though one was breech. But if the one in front was breech (which was the case here) and the one in back was head down, they could lock chins while being born and not be able to be born and it would create an even more dangerous situation.
So, at 8:55pm on May 12, Mother's Day this year, at 29 weeks gestation, Emmett Bryce Lawson was delivered and Makenna Mae Lawson followed at 8:56pm.
Emmett weighed in at 3lbs. 2oz. and Makenna weighed 2lbs. 14oz.
They are both doing amazingly well for 29 week babies. They both have had to have a little oxygen off and on, both have feeding tubes because they were born so early they don't know how to swallow yet. Makenna had a small infection around one of the tubes in her belly which has been treated and healed. But they are good.
Technology is a wonderful thing and I can't believe the ways they have to help babies this small. Special beds, warmers, ways to feed them and handle them that mimic the womb and let the babies eat, rest and thrive.
Emmett and Makenna both were featured on the Children's Miracle Network Telethon on June 1-2, 2013. They showed them several times and told their stories. I am glad that since they were born so early, maybe seeing their stories and their sweet little faces inspired someone else along the way.
Prayers for them have come from all over the world, literally, and I think this more than anything else has been the reason they have done so well. Thank you Lord, for your blessings on Emmett and Makenna and our whole family.
More about my amazing grandchildren later.
